The French national railway company, SNCF, employs over 284,000 people globally and generates €43 billion in annual revenue. Managing 28,000 kilometers of track and keeping more than 15,000 daily passenger trains running safely requires immense logistical coordination. SNCF relies heavily on mobile technology and highly specialized physical tools to maintain this network of high-speed TGV trains. In 2017, SNCF made a strategic decision to transition all new projects to the ecos care service. ecos care’s GSM networking and cloud hosting, coupled with a comprehensive maintenance contract, helped SNCF secure and manage their assets efficiently across the country.

The challenge:
Insecure storage and uncalibrated maintenance tools

When SNCF migrated to tablets for their workflows, their existing, basic storage lockers proved inadequate. They lacked security and could not charge the devices overnight, which heavily impacted workflow and often delayed many workers from performing their duties the next day.

Maintenance technicians also required a strict protocol for the use and calibration of massive 1.3-meter torque wrenches used on TGV axles. Station teams needed a better way to ensure shift walkie-talkie radios were consistently returned and fully charged.

Our solution:
Intelligent depots with load monitoring and calibration workflows

To secure their assets, SNCF replaced their basic lockers with advanced ecos depots and ecos drawer systems:

  • Tablet & Radio Management: The new depots feature integrated power supplies for charging, load monitoring, and GSM network connections to the ecos cloud. For radios, RFID detection verifies they’re returned. And when they are, multi-colored LED lights on the doors indicate charging status (orange for charging, green for fully charged). Workers can always tell at a glance which devices are ready.
  • Tool Calibration: SNCF deployed ecos drawer systems at their "Technicentre" maintenance hubs. The systems automatically manage the distribution of the large TGV torque wrenches. A strict software workflow, managed automatically by the ecos systems, ensures that after each usage interval, the wrench must be calibrated and the technician must enter three calibration results into the system tablet.

The result:
Guaranteed device readiness and strict safety compliance

SNCF eliminated downtime caused by uncharged tablets and radios, helping to ensure more seamless communication across its transportation network. The automated torque wrench management ensures compliance with maintenance safety standards, capturing vital calibration data digitally so it can be evaluated directly in the software.
