Automated device storage for high-security military facilities

Due to strict security regulations, European NATO headquarters strictly prohibit the use of personal smartphones, laptops, and other electronic devices on-site. When personnel or visitors, including VIPs, enter a NATO facility, they are expected to hand over their devices until they leave.

Manual coat and device checks or unmanaged locker rooms often create bottlenecks. Manual systems also introduce the risk of human error. They’re slow and often unreliable at ensuring all devices are sequestered. The command needed an automated system that could securely accept and return devices at scale without constant supervision by base security personnel.

To address this logistical challenge, JFCBS deployed a combination of 110 ecos depot lockers, ecos drawer storage systems, and an electronic key cabinet.

When visitors and personnel arrive, they stow their smartphones, laptops, and other restricted items in the lockers. The system manages access rights electronically, ensuring that only the user can retrieve their specific belongings upon exiting. They swipe their ID badge, and the system will unlock only their compartment.

The integrated key cabinet also secures operational keys and automates access control to all restricted areas on the base. Authorized personnel only have access to the keys they need to perform their duties. Email and SMS alerts let supervisors know instantly if someone has not returned a key on time.

By automating device storage, the JFCBS team enhanced the overall security of its facility and personnel. The automated systems ensure compliance with the base's strict electronic device policies, without slowing the entry process for visitors. VIPs can make it to briefings on time, contractors can get in and out to get work completely efficiently, and everyone is able to safely retrieve their belongings without error.

On top of the benefits to visitors, the security team improved their performance as well. Security personnel no longer spend time manually managing personal property. The lockers maintain a fully automated, auditable trail of locker usage, so security personnel can pull a 100% accurate report instantly whenever needed.
