Streamlining shared equipment management for modern corrections

Equipping a large correctional staff was a significant challenge for the leadership at Gablingen Prison. It came down to logistical challenges. How can you ensure personnel across their sprawling facility, across multiple shifts, all have ready access to the equipment they need for their high-security work? The solution in the past was to buy large surpluses of radios, firearms, and ammunition so there was always enough to go around. But with budgets tightening, this approach was no longer feasible.

The prison’s administration recognized that a traditional, individualized storage approach was inefficient and not going to solve their issue, which was fundamentally a management problem. They needed an automated, centralized system that allowed shift workers to securely share a pooled inventory of radios, weapons, and keys.

To support this shared-resource strategy, the leadership had in mind ecos systems implemented a customized, automated storage network. The individual lockers feature a combination of customized compartments sized specifically for the prison's inventory mix.

The installation includes 304 medium-sized ecos lockers for standard equipment such as radios, alongside 20 specialized 1m/2 drawer units for highly sensitive items such as firearms and keyrings. Personnel authenticate at a central terminal to access only the specific lockers or drawers with the gear they’re allowed to sign out for their current shift. This ensures that different officers can securely use the exact same piece of equipment at different times of day.

Shifting to a shared-equipment model helped Gablingen Prison reducee its overall equipment inventory. Because the ecos system provides automated accountability for every item, staff can confidently check out pooled equipment knowing its history and current condition are fully tracked.

This approach lowered equipment procurement costs and minimized the physical footprint required for storage inside the facility. Facility managers now spend less time auditing inventory and more time focusing on facility operations, knowing the automated system maintains a precise log of all shared equipment.
