The Château de Fontainebleau is a historic French palace situated approximately 60 km (37 miles) south of Paris. As a residence for French monarchs for eight centuries, the estate is monumental in scale, boasting 1,500 rooms and surrounded by over 300 acres of parkland. It was notably used by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Managing physical security for such an expansive and historically significant property meant devising a process to handle hundreds of keys without disrupting daily operations. The leadership of the Château de Fontainebleau estate chose ecos systems smart key cabinets to handle this critical process.
The challenge:
Managing access across a massive historical estate
Maintaining a château of this size requires a large workforce, including many personnel who need privileged access, such as curators, security personnel, and maintenance crews. The team at Château de Fontainebleau faces the perpetual challenge of providing these key personnel with the access they need while still protecting important historical artifacts and buildings. Traditional key management relying on manual logs and lockboxes is highly inefficient for a facility of this importance, especially one spanning hundreds of acres. When keys are misplaced or untraceable, it creates critical security vulnerabilities they can’t afford.
Our solution:
High-capacity key management
To centralize and automate access control across such a large facility, ecos systems designed a high-capacity electronic key management solution capable of intelligently managing up to 360 keys in real time.
Rather than relying on basic lockboxes scattered across the property, the château consolidated its keys into a centralized ecos system with digital controls. Staff authenticate themselves with their existing employee badges and get instant access to only the keys they need to do their jobs. Supervisors can track all work in real time and see who has which keys signed out and which are overdue for return.
The result:
Optimized operations and historical preservation
The transition to an automated, high-capacity system has streamlined facility management at the estate. By eliminating manual key administration, no one is delayed starting their shifts due to lost or misplaced keys. Facility managers now benefit from a complete, real-time digital audit trail, knowing exactly who has accessed which key and when. The ecos key system ensures that the historic château is fully protected while daily maintenance and operational staff move freely and efficiently.
