Dynamic equipment distribution and automated charging for in-train service teams
The Luxembourg Railway Company (CFL) is the country's largest corporate employer with over 5,000 employees. To keep over 31.4 million annual passengers moving efficiently across more than 1,000 daily routes, CFL’s in-train service personnel require reliable, fully charged equipment. In 2017, CFL decided to purchase a tool management system to overhaul the way they managed essential work tools across 5 major train stations and their Train Maintenance Centers.

Challenge:
Managing device charging and complex inventory.
CFL needed a secure way to manage and dispense their crew’s vital electronics, such as ticket scanners and hand printers. They also needed a way to charge these devices while they were securely stored. And at their maintenance centers, they faced an additional challenge for managing many different tools of widely varying sizes, shapes, and materials.
Our solution:
Dynamic release lockers with integrated power and RFID.
CFL installed ecos locker systems tailored with specific charging options to accommodate different device types, including 220V, 12V, and 5V USB sockets. The system utilizes ecos webman software and individual locker RFID recognition. Instead of assigning a specific tool to a specific person, the lockers use a dynamic release function. When a worker authenticates, the webman software automatically opens a locker containing the most fully charged device. Workers don’t need to check. They’re assured they’re receiving the most fully charged device possible. In the maintenance devices centers, multi-RFID recognition was deployed in ecos lockers to secure the various tools, using tags tailored to different equipment profiles.

Result:
Maximum uptime and streamlined shift transitions.
CFL gained significant operational efficiencies over time using dynamic release lockers. Workers no longer waste time with uncharged tools, and the software maintains a real-time, complete inventory lookup across all 5 locations. The rotating distribution system also spreads wear and tear across all devices.
