The Moabit Criminal Court in Berlin, Germany, is the largest criminal court in Europe. It handles approximately 60,000 criminal cases annually, supported by over 340 judges and 360 prosecutors. Each of those 60,000 cases pulls in a number of visitors, institution staff, and media. Processing such a high volume of personnel and visitors each day takes highly efficient but uncompromising security measures.
The Moabit Criminal Court partnered with ecos systems to automate their visitor property storage using ecos smart lockers. The lockers streamlined building access control and reduced the burden on security personnel. The new technology securely automated the entire transaction process, allowing courthouse security to focus on the people coming and going.

The challenge:
Managing visitor property during peak traffic
Securing a sprawling judicial facility requires tight control over all people and materials entering or leaving the perimeter. Judicial personnel follow established safety procedures when entering the building each day for work, but visitors arriving from the street present a unique challenge. They’re carrying bags, electronics they need in their normal lives, and other personal items that cannot enter a sensitive facility. A judicial facility the size of the Moabit Criminal Court needs a way to process and store those visitor belongings at scale.
That was both a security and a logistical challenge for the courthouse. Staff-managed coat checks or basic, single-door lockers require visitors to return to the entrance, creating intersecting foot traffic between those entering and exiting. This cross-traffic complicates security monitoring and increases the workload for courthouse personnel.
Our solution:
Automated pass-through storage for unidirectional flow
To address this challenge, the Moabit Court asked eco systems to design a customized system of pass-through lockers. Visitors could deposit their items on one side when entering and retrieve them on the other when leaving. ecos was able to do that with a space-efficient lean solution featuring 48 L-1/3 slim lockers and 15 larger lockers to accommodate different storage needs.
The core feature requested by the courthouse was the pass-through, dual-door opening mechanism. Visitors deposit their belongings on the entry side during their initial screening. When their business is concluded, they retrieve their items from the exit side of the locker bank using temporary credentials they received on deposit. This creates a single-direction traffic flow, entirely removing the need for visitors to cross back into the secure entrance zone or request staff assistance.
The result:
Streamlined building access and reduced security workload
The ecos systems pass-through smart lockers have allowed the Moabit Criminal Court to decouple visitor property management from their active security screening process. Visitors now manage their own belongings independently as part of the standard entry and exit process.
This automated approach significantly reduced the daily workload for perimeter security personnel. Staff can now focus their full attention on screening procedures rather than acting as property clerks. Ultimately, the building's entry and exit processes are faster, foot traffic is logically separated, and the facility maintains exceptionally high security standards.
